Being named a recipient of a FRYSCKy Above and Beyond Award simply does not come easy. The work that generally results in such recognition is often stressful and usually requires a person to work outside their own comfort zone to ensure success for the greater good. Recipients are about “we” and “us” NOT “me” and “I”.
Norma Meek of Ashland KY has personified exemplary service in leadership positions and associations for decades. It is evident she truly must have started as an infant since her tenure in education as a teacher and administrator spans 49 years, 10 of which were in FRYSC!
Her educational background and community organizational skills helped shape her implementation for one of the original 1990 Region 7 Family Resource Centers. Norma’s Boyd County East FRC was the inaugural Harry J Cowherd award winner with several support staff and mentees transitioning as excellent FRYSC coordinators over the years.
Norma served as FRYSCKy Coalition President, and it must be noted, the first president to initiate the legislative communication “call to action” for urgent advocacy.
Today FRYSC sustains as the LAST remaining component of the KY Education Reform Act according to the original intent of the legislation authored by Dr David Hornbeck, the chief architect of KERA and our FRYSC program. Norma was one of the original Yale University School of the 21st Century Fellows in partnership with Division of FRYSC and taught at the summer institute for many years.
Norma has advanced and promoted the founding principles of FRYSC for bringing schools, government, business, industry and faith -based groups to the table for decades. IT is our privilege to honor her as our inspirational and distinguished FRYSC Above and Beyond Service Award Winner 2022.
*Doug Jones DFRYSC RPM for Region 7 and long-time colleague and friend of Norma presented the award. *
